Certified vs. Authorized
The Real Rolex Story

Many years ago Rolex initiated a program whereby a watchmaker who was employed by an Official Rolex store could send their watchmaker to the Rolex facility in New York.  After attending a short instructional program, this employee was called a "Certified Rolex Watchmaker."  This program was discontinued about 8 years ago.  Also, this "certification" was only valid if the watchmaker remained in the employ of the store he worked for.

Authorized Rolex Service is about the most abused term found in the watch trade today.  Everyone claims to be "Authorized" but in fact, there is only about 3 actual Authorized Rolex Service centers available to the public.  One is the actual Rolex Headquarters in New York, and the other two are private companies who have been associated with Rolex since about the dawn of time.  There is of course the Official Rolex Store or dealer.  Most of these stores do not have any qualified watchmaker on site.  These stores simply take your watch and send it to Rolex in New York to have it serviced.

Genuine Parts vs. Generic Parts

A genuine part is any item either an internal movement part or an attachment such as a diamond dial or diamond bezel that has either been manufactured by Rolex or one of its authorized agents.  It stands to reason that Rolex itself would have no interest in producing sapphire crystals and would rely on manufacturers who have the expertise in this area.

The Problem

Those of us who have been involved in the jewelry industry for many years will remember with vivid detail when Rolex decided to go out and "buy up" existing inventories of Rolex parts from wholesale suppliers.  This hurt many independent watch repairman.  You simply could not get genuine parts.  Rolex's reason for this was to insure that all repairs went directly to them for service.  This failed for several reasons.  Rolex was inundated with a backlog of repairs and simply could not handle the volume.  Many times, a customer would receive a letter from Rolex with the un-repaired watch stating that the watch was to old to be serviced, and then told the customer to visit a Rolex dealer to purchase a new Rolex watch.  I have seen this on watches that were less than 10 years old.

The other reason this failed was the fact that many companies began producing generic Rolex parts.  These included crystals, crowns, case tubes, gaskets, dials, bezels and a host of internal parts.  In many cases these generics were produced by the same companies that made the same parts for Rolex.  Rolex now had another problem on their hands.  Rolex watches were turning up everywhere with generic parts in them and sales of the genuine parts dropped off.  As expected, Rolex responded by running full page ads in newspapers informing customers that their Rolex watches were no longer genuine and that using generic parts voided the warrantee.

The Solution

Rolex again made genuine parts available to material supply houses across the country.  The independent watchmaker could now offer his customers a quality Rolex repair using genuine Rolex material.  The independent could even buy direct from Rolex.  This was a first in of itself and has worked great for several years now.  But.....nothing lasts forever.

All Good Things

Well, it was bound to happen, again.  Rolex is again refusing to supply genuine parts to material supply houses.  We use several of them for our parts and have been informed of this situation.  The independent watchmaker can't even buy direct from Rolex anymore.  One of our suppliers informed us that they might not be able to fill our future material orders for Rolex parts.  It seems that Rolex now has a new program where they want to go out and inspect each supplier and each independent watchmaker before they will make parts available to them.  Our supplier has been in business since 1906 and they don't feel confident they will meet the new standards of Rolex.  They indicated they are now stocking up on generic parts again.  This supplier is in the process of forwarding the letter from Rolex to us.  When we receive it, we will post it on our web site for all to read.

Does the word "Microsoft" ring a bell.  It should.  Let Microsoft give away programs and they end up in court for years.  Let Rolex refuse to sell parts and restrict the trade of the American watchmaker and what happens, nothing.  We let this company operate in this country and allow them to sell their watches in this country and this is the thanks we get as citizens of the United States.  Rolex won't even use web site hosting companies that are located within the United States.  The companies which host both Rolex web sites are located in the United Kingdom.  These two web sites are Rolex.com and Rolexawards.com.

Like we said, all good things must come to an end, or do they?

What Will We Do & How Will This Impact Our Customers

Will we continue to repair Rolex watches?  You bet we will.  Will we use genuine Rolex parts?  We will make every attempt to use them.  If they are not available, we will use generics.  You will be informed of this fact.  You will also be informed that by using generics your Rolex warrantee may become void.  This is not an issue, as the Rolex warrantee is only good for one year.  From past experience we have found that the generic parts are just as good as the genuine Rolex parts.  These parts are often manufactured by the same companies that produce them for Rolex.

We are also going to encourage our customers to purchase diamond dials and bezels from companies other than Rolex.  We will provide links to these companies and you can view their products online.  Replacement solid gold bands along with stainless and gold bands are available from many different suppliers.  Remember, you bought your Rolex, you did not rent it from Rolex.  It is your personal property and you are free to do with it as you will.

What Tools Do We Use To Service Rolex Watches

We have invested a large amount of money in genuine Rolex tools.  We have genuine Rolex crystal and bezel presses.  We have genuine Rolex tube insertion tools.  We have both types of genuine Rolex Micro-Stella wrenches used for regulation of Rolex watches.  We have a complete set of punches used for the installation of oscillating weights that are genuine Rolex.  We even have the correct genuine Rolex date mechanism screw tightening tool.  So as not to damage a Rolex case, we even have genuine Rolex case opening tools.  We also use the Vibrograf B200A timing machine and also have the proper pressure testing equipment.

With this investment, why would we not repair Rolex watches.  The consumer needs the independent watch repairman.  Why pay double to have your Rolex repaired by using an Official Rolex dealer?  Did you know that when you take your watch to them, and they send it off to Rolex for service,  Rolex bills the dealer who in turn most generally doubles their cost of the repair and this is what you pay.  Is this right?  Or is it just business?  You be the judge.

Guess Who Rolex Wants To Sue Now

Is there really no end to Rolex and their aggressive campaign to protect their trademarks and to restrict the trade of the American watchmaker?  All one has to do is search the internet and you will find many articles about Rolex suing just about everyone.  Don't believe me, well now they are thinking about suing, you guessed it, eBay.  I doubt this would ever happen, as eBay could buy and sell Rolex many times over.
